(Last week’s edition can be found HERE)
This week's edition of Match of the Week is going to be a little different. Usually, when I write each of these posts, I will talk a little about each of the fighters, their backgrounds and what you can expect from them in the match before you watch it. However, that is not what is going to happen this week, as it is going to revolve completely around one person, Mason Monsevais.
Mason Monsevais |
Mason Monsevais is a blue belt under the Mendes Brothers and trains at the Art of Jiu Jitsu Academy in Costa Mesa, California. Under the IBJJF rankings, Mason is number one in the world in his weight division (Light Feather) and is number three in the world in the absolute division. This year, Mason took gold at the Europeans and silver at the recent Mundials. Mason is without a doubt one of BJJ's rising stars, and you should see him on the podium of every major BJJ tournament to come.
Coming from the Mendes Brothers academy you would expect nothing less for him to have an amazing guard. The guards which Mason uses frequently throughout his matches are the closed guard, spider guard and the de la riva guard, and most often transitioning between each of them. On the subject of transitions, this is something which Mason does flawlessly. Most often you will see him transition to the omoplata from a variety of positions or to the back. Many of these can be seen in the match I am sharing with you today.
The video of the match can be found below. I hope you guys enjoy!
See you next week!
